What was your career path that led you to your current position?
I was an intern under Curt Eley, who was the Dean of Admissions at UD during my time as a student. He introduced me to a freelance writer and designated me a student writer. I helped create new marketing materials and loved it. After graduation, I worked as a paralegal, and then took time off to raise my children, but I never forgot my time as a writer. Three years into the stay-at-home mom life I realized how much I missed work and writing. I called Curt and launched my company, Lighthouse Writing, LLC. He gave me my first project. It's been five years of steady growth and interesting opportunities.
What kind of credentials, education, training, prior experience are needed?
A degree in English and/or a background in writing (both technical and creative) is a plus. A knowledge of marketing, web content, and a basic understanding of the freelance world.
How was your major and/or your degree from UD related to your current work?
It wasn't a far leap from English to writing. UD provided me with a solid foundation in analytic writing, synthesizing information, and creativity, which I have used on every project I have ever undertaken.
