What was your career path that led you to your current position?
Sales. I had a job right out of UD working as a beverage distributor for 9 months. I then went to work for my brother in law selling life insurance for New York Life. A client of mine at NYL had a small but growing commercial real estate firm and he lured me away from the insurance business. After a few moves in commercial real estate, I decided to start my own firm, with my values and beliefs on life and running a business.
What kind of credentials, education, training, prior experience are needed?
You have to be licensed as a real estate agent/broker. there is very little decent training in commercial real estate, so it is key to find a mentor. This is a business where you must simply hammer every day and practice until you have the pitch down - the training is on the job and you learn from a mentor how best to negotiate deals, have client interactions and complete solid transactions.
How was your major and/or your degree from UD related to your current work?
I've had several UD people work for me over the years, and I will tell you the UD education helped me be able to think. Many of my brokers want me to give them a formula to plug in numbers, but UD grads want to know what the purpose, goal and end result is and then they will come up with the formula. It really comes down to understanding and continuing personal and business development, versus going through the actions.
