This fall the Satish & Yasmin Gupta College of Business will add two new offerings to the current Master of Science and Master of Business Administration degree programs by including a major and concentration in Global Business and Business Analytics.
A Changing Global Economy
In recent years, the global economy has seen industries in western markets becoming more and more saturated. In the face of stagnant or slowing growth, many developed companies are beginning to look toward emerging economies. In 2003 when Goldman Sachs began using the term BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) in a report, large corporations began considering these areas for expansion opportunities.
These opportunities, however, are not completely limited to large businesses. As Internet usage continues to expand across the world, more companies are finding easier, faster access to these new markets. A 2014 Nielsen study found that 32 percent of Chinese survey respondents had purchased overseas goods online. When one considers that the number of Chinese Internet users surpassed 649 million users – over twice the entire population of the United States – it’s easy to see why businesses are looking abroad to promote growth.
A Need for Global Business Skills
While a 2014 the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) found that most US-based recruiters plan to keep their employees within the country, many are expanding business abroad and even sending new graduate business hires to regions such as East & Southeast Asia, Mexico, Caribbean, Latin America and other parts of Asia.
As American companies continue expanding and foreign-based countries begin to quickly grow and compete in the global arena, it is critical for business leaders develop the necessary skills to manage in a global environment.
