When prospective students hear the GMAT is optional for applicants to our master of science and MBA degrees, there’s sometimes an air of skepticism. With thousands of business schools around the world relying on the GMAT for over 60 years to prove students have business management aptitude, we can certainly understand why.
A New Admissions Approach
But in recent years, many schools around the country have begun to eliminate the GMAT while others have placed less of an emphasis on it; some business schools even allow students to request a GMAT waiver on a case-by-case basis.
Here at UD, we believe in a holistic approach. We look at the whole student, considering more than just one factor. Applicants are evaluated on a variety of aspects including undergraduate academic performance, graduate coursework, postgraduate professional or military experience, and a degree from an AACSB-accredited program along with a GMAT or GRE score, if the applicant chooses to provide one. This process allows us to see what our applicants have already accomplished in their respective field. Of our graduate business school students, 85 percent already work full time in mid to upper level management positions. On average, our students’ work experience ranges from five to six years. Some are entrepreneurs, having started their own business and in search of business skills and leadership experience to help them be innovative leaders. Many UD students do not even have an educational background in business. Some of our students have degrees in areas such as history, engineering, journalism or computer science.
Our approach to admissions is that one test score should not determine your capabilities. Your hard work and determination are solid indicators of how you will perform as a student.
